The Pedersoli Howdah Pistol is certainly one of the more unusual firearms we have reviewed. Think of a double barreled shotgun with the barrels sawed off about an inch in front of the fore end and the stock sawed off behind the pistol grip. Legally, however, this is not a sawed-off shotgun.

It is a factory made pistol with 10 inch rifled barrels and therefore completely legal. This is a beautifully finished, all steel and walnut gun, without any plastic or aluminum alloy parts. It comes in a fitted, foam padded, hinged polymer case that is ideal for protecting the pistol during trips between home and gun range.

As the name implies, the Ithaca pistol was intended for convenient use from an automobile and also to dissuade burglars home defense. It was equipped with a typical shotgun brass bead front sight and no rear sight at all, as it was intended to be pointed like a shotgun, rather than aimed like a pistol. A "howdah" is the basket platform mounted on the back of an elephant in which people would ride. Hunters in British Colonial India hunted tigers from howdahs in the s and early s.

Sometimes, the big cats expressed their resentment at being shot at from the back of an elephant by leaping atop the elephant and attacking their tormenters. Armed with a single shot or double barreled rifle, which had usually been fired by the time the tiger attacked, a big bore pistol stored in the howdah became the hunter's last line of defense. Originally, howdah pistols were simply double barreled rifles sawn-off at both ends.

Made for the purpose howdah pistols were eventually introduced. These were usually chambered for powerful black powder rifle cartridges of the day, such as. Some howdah pistols were chambered for shotgun shells, instead of rifle cartridges, presumably using slug or buckshot loads. Later, I believe, some howdah pistols were even chambered for Nitro Express rifle cartridges.

The hunter's rifle and howdah pistol could use the same ammunition, preventing confusion when reloading. Shooting one of these creations must have been almost as exciting as the tiger attack itself! However, howdah pistols were also chambered for more conventional, and manageable, big bore handgun cartridges. There isn't a lot of visual difference between the true howdah pistols made at the end of the 19th Century and the later Ithaca Auto and Burglar pistol.

However, howdah pistols generally had rifled barrels to stabilize bullets and rifle sights, while the Ithaca pistol was a smooth bore shotgun designed for use only with shotgun shells.

The modern Pedersoli Howdah Pistol reviewed here has fully rifled, six groove barrels. However, this rifling is slower and shallower than the rifling in a Colt SAA revolver. It accepts both. Note that the Pedersoli Howdah Pistol is proofed to a maximum BAR or 15, psi; in other words, for standard pressure. Nor should shells using steel shot be fired in this pistol.

Naturally, when shooting. In any case, double barreled rifles and pistols are known for "minute of pie plate" accuracy, which is to say if you are an accuracy nut, you should look elsewhere. The supplied sights are typical of what you might find on a classic howdah pistol. There is a ramp mounted brass bead front and a folding, windage screw adjustable but not elevation adjustable express type rear sight. Except for the lack of any elevation adjustment, this is the sighting arrangement common on Nitro Express rifles.

Express sights are not as precise as the square notch and square front blade Patridge type sights supplied on most pistols today, but they are fast to acquire. The Lancaster Pistol was a multi-barrelled either 2 or 4 barrels handgun produced in England in the mid-late 19th century, [1] chambered in a variety of centrefire pistol calibres—chiefly.

During the s he invented oval bore rifling and the gas check bullet. It was a modernised version of the pepper-box pistol popular in the early-mid 19th century. Sometimes classified as a Howdah pistolthe Lancaster pistol enjoyed popularity with British officers in India and Africa during the British Raj owing to its faster rate of fire and increased reliability over contemporary revolvers.

Its ammunition had greater stopping power than the contemporary Beaumont—Adams and Colt Navy revolvers, making it ideal for colonial warfare. When facing charging tribesmen like the Zulus or Ansar the so-called Sudanese Dervishesmore modern ammunition tended to go straight through the enemy who would keep going.

What was needed was a heavy lead bullet that would lodge in their body and bring them down. It was eventually displaced by the various Webley revolvers in the late 19th century as revolvers became more reliable and faster to reload, thus removing many of the advantages of the multi-barrel design.

A few were still in use as late as World War Iand they were well known to be solidly built and easy to maintain. A double-barreled Lancaster howdah pistol with a unique spring-loaded blade is the weapon of the big-game hunter Remington in The Ghost and the Darkness. The Lancaster pistol exists as the Howdah Pistol in the video game Battlefield 1. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Type of Multi-barrel pistol. Howdah to High Power. By locality China Europe Kerala state Thailand. The Howdah Pistol is a term referring to several different types of 19th-century large-caliber multi-barrel handguns. They were developed by the British hunters in India for close range, last ditch, defense against Tigers and other dangerous game.

Many different English gun makers produced Howdah style handguns. A Howdah was the basket that hunters rode in on top of elephants in India. Tigers were known to climb up the elephant to reach the hunters in the Howdah. At such close range a long barreled rifle was less than effective. The Howdah Pistol was perfect for such a close and dangerous scenario. They typically had two or four barrels, though three barreled models were also made. The double barrel models can be found in either the side by side or over and under configuration.

Howdah pistols were massive, powerful and delivered a hell of a wallop at both ends. However it was believed that in a life and death situation heavy recoil would not be noticed. Howdahs were also carried and used by British officers in many of England's colonial conflicts during the 19th century.

At that time revolvers were considered to be not very mechanically reliable and many British officers were less than impressed with the stopping power of the 36 caliber ball that the Colt Navy revolver fired. The heavy lead slugs fired by the Howdah pistols were very powerful and considered to be just the thing for either a charging tiger or a charging native remember it was the 19th century, a time of empire and imperial wars at close range.

Nowadays, Howdahs are very collectible. The Howdah Pistol and variants can be seen in the following films, television series, video games, and anime used by the following actors:. Jump to: navigationsearch.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate. The new Pedersoli Howdah double pistol from the Italian Firearms Group is an historic design with a lineage that dates back to late 19 th century Europe and development of the first Howdah-style double barrel pistols for big game hunters. In America the handful of Howdah-style percussion pistols and later cartridge pistols, both side-by-side and superposed versions that found their way to our shores, were quickly copied by gunsmiths, as well as those with little more than a hacksaw and an idea.

The design is based on the inch barrel length Flues Model of the break-open, double barrel pistol introduced by Ithaca in and manufactured through The most important difference is that the Pedersoli has rifled barrels and is chambered for 3-inch. The grip shape is nearly identical to the early Ithaca models, including the integrated spur to stabilize the gun in the hand during recoil, a design seen on many European Howdah pistols. The Pedersoli also uses a sliding thumb operated safety and break-open lever like a shotgun, but the pistol has a slightly longer wrist than the original Ithaca, thus increasing the length of reach to the trigger.

It was also decided to offer both traditional double triggers or an optional special order non-selective trigger for the Pedersoli, firing the barrels sequentially right and left. Another change is the addition of a folding rear leaf sight to allow better accuracy with. The vast majority of original smoothbore Ithaca models were chambered in 20 ga. The Pedersoli Howdah. The silver welded barrels use a monoblock with two lugs, and a horizontal wedge inserted on the frame that fits inside the lugs when the action is closed.

In terms of handling, the Pedersoli is about as basic as it gets, think double barrel shotgun scaled down to pistol size, but with the same manual of operation, one lever to open it, load two rounds, close it, and the action is ready.

The gun also has a manual tang safety, just like a shotgun. Drop in two hard-hitting gr. With The heavier hitting combo loads, Critical Defense Triple Defense and PDX1 require a strong support hand hold with fingers wrapped over the edge of the barrels.

Recoil, as expected, is heavy but still manageable, and the Pedersoli does not ride back in the hand due to the grip angle and grip spur, which keeps the pistol centered in the web of the shooting hand. The best hold on the gun is with the strong side arm extended a Weaver stance works well with the support hand firmly grasping the forearm.

One gun that has always seemed very interesting to me is the so-called Howdah pistol.

The history is rich and it was originally created to serve as a last-ditch effort from attacking animals whilst on the hunt.

Howdah pistol

The name of the gun originates from the use of the Howdah — or rather the carriage if you will — placed atop an elephant while hunting. These were quite popular for hunting in India especially during the late 19 th and into the early 20 th century.

The need arose after, one must assume, a few hunters were plucked from their howdahs by angry tigers! The hunter needed a way to defend himself quickly and easily — much more so than a long barreled rifle could provide.

These guns started out merely as cut-down, out of use rifles. Therefore, it is typical to see them using rifle cartridges that have also been trimmed. Because of the close range use, long distance accuracy was not a requirement! They were also naturally produced by much smaller firms and probably cobbled together in India, as well. Through the natural evolution of cartridges, the howdah pistol was later manufactured using pinfire and then centerfire cartridges. As stated earlier, many of these were merely shortened version of their rifle counterparts or would otherwise employ cartridges such as the Boxer which was developed by William Tranter of Birmingham or, later on, the more common Webley.

I have seen many of these howdah pistols over the years and quite a few of them go through the major auctions. Perhaps not serving much of a true purpose these days, I still think they are typically great values if one is interested in the history or possible providence of these types of guns.

It was typically intended for defence against tigers, lions, and other dangerous animals that might be encountered in remote areas. Multi-barreled breech loading designs were later favoured over the original muzzle loading designs for Howdah pistols, because they offered faster reloading than was possible with contemporary revolvers, [1] which had to be loaded and unloaded through a gate in the side of the frame. The term "howdah pistol" comes from the howdaha large platform mounted on the back of an elephant.

Hunters, especially during the period of the British Raj in India, used howdahs as a platform for hunting wild animals and needed large-calibre side-arms for protection from animal attacks. These earliest howdah pistols were flintlock designs, and it was not until about 60 years later percussion models in single or double barrel congfiguration were seen.

By the s and early s cartridge firing and fully rifled howdah pistols were in normal everyday use. The first breech loading howdah pistols were little more than sawn-off rifles[2] typically in. Later English firearms makers manufactured specially-designed howdah pistols [3] in both rifle calibres and more conventional handgun calibres such as.

Even though howdah pistols were designed for emergency defense from dangerous animals in Africa and India, British officers adopted them for personal protection in other far-flung outposts of the British Empire.
